Over the past weekend, 643 road accidents occurred on Russian roads, in which 62 people were killed and 782 injured. This was reported to Izvestia on May 18 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

35 accidents involving buses were recorded, in which one person was killed, 44 more road users, including six children, required medical assistance. The reason for 18 bus accidents were traffic violations committed by their drivers.

As a result of 127 accidents involving pedestrians, 42 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 85 outside their area of operation, six people were killed, and 128 more pedestrians were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 45 child pedestrians, 17 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway outside the designated areas.

In addition, 137 accidents involving minors were registered on Russian roads over the weekend, as a result of which 155 young road users were injured, including 53 passengers and 19 motor transport drivers. One child died.

For example, in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Yugra, a 53-year-old passenger car driver with less than two years of driving experience ran over a 10-year-old boy who was crossing the roadway at an unregulated pedestrian crossing unaccompanied by adults. As a result of the accident, the child died.

The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded drivers of the need to slow down before pedestrian crossings and be extremely careful when driving along road sections located near residential buildings, parks and places of mass residence of citizens. When approaching an unregulated pedestrian crossing, the driver is obliged to assess the road situation in advance and provide an advantage to pedestrians, especially children, whose behavior on the road is often unpredictable, the department stressed.

Earlier, on May 15, it was reported that the State Duma rejected a bill on amendments to the Administrative Code, which proposed to consolidate administrative responsibility for violations of the average speed if it is recorded by traffic cameras.
