Visitors to fitness clubs can independently identify problems with the quality of water in the pool by the smell, the condition of the tiles and the transparency of the water. Emil Khalimov, co-owner of the Lapino Fitness country club, told Izvestia about this on May 19.

According to him, saving on the water treatment system remains one of the most common practices in commercial swimming pools. First of all, clubs are abandoning automatic reagent dosing stations that monitor pH and chlorine levels around the clock.

"There is no station in the club that cuts the budget, and the reagents are poured by the administrator on schedule with a regular tester in his hands. Concentrations in this scheme are constantly jumping," Khalimov said.

The expert explained that problems with water can be indicated by the pungent smell of chlorine, eye irritation, foam in the corners of the pool, dry overflow grilles and cloudy water. Dark or greenish tile seams near the water and slippery handrails often indicate the appearance of biofilm.

According to Khalimov, in a high-quality pool, the dividing line at the opposite end of the bowl should be clearly visible even during peak hours. He also stressed that there are no completely chlorine-free commercial pools, and ultraviolet light and ozone are used only as an addition to basic disinfection methods.

The expert recalled that water quality standards are regulated by SanPiN and SP. In particular, the level of free chlorine should be between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l, and the bound chlorine should not exceed 0.2 mg/l. The staff is required to take measurements every four hours and provide a production control log at the request of the visitor.

"They immediately take it out and leaf through it, which means that the club is confident in the water. They go to the manager and stall for time, which means there is no habit of control," he stressed.

Khalimov added that before buying a subscription, it is worth clarifying the water disinfection system, the availability of an automatic reagent dosing station and the time of full water exchange in the pool.

On May 7, dermatologist and cosmetologist Tatiana Egorova reported that men's thick beards and body hair do not pose an epidemiological threat to pool visitors, provided that basic hygiene and normal disinfection of water are observed. The specialist explained that the main function of the swimming cap is not related to protection from infections, but is used to prevent hair from entering the water and clogging the filtration systems of the pool.
