Stocks of new passenger cars decreased in Russia
By mid-May, the total stocks of new passenger cars in Russia at dealers and distributors are less than 400 thousand units, while a year ago at the same time the stock was estimated at 500 thousand units. This was reported on May 18 by Vedomosti, citing calculations by Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency.
According to the specialist, the drains of passenger cars are normalizing, and the current stock is enough for three months of sales. In annual terms, the decrease in inventories is estimated at 120-140 thousand vehicles.
In January — April of last year, out of 349,000 new passenger cars sold, almost 83% were copies of previous years of production. This was due to the "huge" stocks of cars, the expert noted. At the same time, in the first four months of this year, of the 382.5 thousand new passenger cars sold, only 56% were those produced in 2025. About 8% of the market was made up of cars built in 2024 and older, and only 36% were produced in 2026.
According to the interlocutors of the publication, dealers' more flexible approach to the formation of warehouses and the revival of demand, the growth of local production with the restart of sites and the emergence of new brands contribute to the reduction of waste.
As reported on May 12, Alexey Podshchekoldin, the head of the ROAD, said that last year, if cars were in the dealer's warehouse for two months, then his margin was completely "eaten up" when selling these cars. Therefore, dealers tried to sell cars as quickly as possible and made discounts, and the buyer could bargain.
