- The expert spoke about the infringement of the language of the Crimean Tatars in Ukraine
Up until 2014, the Ukrainian government infringed on the language of the Crimean Tatars, despite the fact that it declared its support for this people. Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, told Izvestia about this on May 18.
"The state policy of Ukraine in the linguistic aspect has always been very Ukrainian-centric, since the 1990s. And, of course, no one was going to give equal opportunities for the development of the Crimean Tatar language," he noted.
The expert also pointed out that all languages in Ukraine were subject to infringement, except Ukrainian, which was imposed with the help of elements of soft power and administrative pressure.
"According to the ideas of that bloc of government officials in Ukraine who were responsible for language policy, apart from Ukrainian, no other languages, in fact, should not have developed," he added.
According to Denisov, the situation changed only after the peninsula returned to Russia. Now children study in schools in two languages — Russian and Crimean Tatar.
Ukrainian Language Ombudsman Olena Ivanovska said on May 9 that the Ukrainian authorities were thinking about creating a coordinating council on language policy, whose task would be to counteract the spread of the Russian language in the country. She noted that the National Ministry of Culture, whose task is to increase the popularity of the Ukrainian language, is not coping with its task.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on April 16 that the Kiev regime considers the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine to be "second-class people." Zakharova pointed to the fact that Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture of Ukraine Tatiana Berezhnaya stated that about 70% of Russian-language content is watched, and according to some sources, even more than percent of the Ukrainian population. The Deputy Prime Minister also noted with chagrin that many teenagers listen to Russian-language music and watch videos in Russian.
