Switzerland has proposed obliging migrants from the European Union (EU) to pay a special fee if their influx creates an additional burden on the country's infrastructure. This was reported by Bloomberg on May 17.

"Immigrants are settling in Switzerland, having already created a cozy nest for themselves. Therefore, we can ask them to pay something for it," said Andrea Caroni, president of the Swiss Council of Cantons.

He intends to submit the initiative to Parliament as part of a discussion on the internal application of the new package of agreements between Switzerland and the EU. The amount of the possible fee and the mechanism of its collection have not yet been specified.

The initiative appeared against the background of the upcoming referendum on limiting the country's population. Supporters of the restrictions point to the growing strain on railways, highways and the housing market. The discussion around migration has intensified in Switzerland at the same time as the discussion of new agreements with the European Union.

The Guardian newspaper reported on February 12 that Switzerland will hold a referendum in the summer of 2026 on the initiative of the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) on setting a population limit of up to 10 million people. If the population reaches 10 million, additional restrictions will come into force, and if there is no reduction in the number, the government will be forced to withdraw from the agreement on free movement with the EU.
