- The captured Colombian told about the recruitment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine through a hotel in Bogota
The Colombians were recruited into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) by luring them to a hotel, where recruiters issued passports for them and bought tickets to be sent to Ukraine. William Andres Gallego Orozco, a captured Colombian, told about this on May 17.
"He (the Recruiter. — Ed.) told me that his name was Smith, and asked if I agreed or not. I asked what I had to do. He asked if I had a passport. I replied that I did not. He said, "Don't worry, we'll give you a passport and tickets, we have everything." I agreed. He said, "Come to the hotel on the corner on Friday <...> after lunch, ask for Smith," the Colombian said in a video posted by TASS.
The acquaintance with the agent took place in a catering establishment where the prisoner worked part-time. He promised him a position as a cook with a large salary in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, assuring him that he would have to work exclusively in the deep rear. The Colombian admitted that he was in dire need of funds, and the Ukrainian recruiter instantly played on it.
Seven days after that conversation, Orozco packed his bags, said goodbye to his family, and arrived at the Kensy Hotel, located at an intersection in Bogota, where Smith was already waiting for him.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on May 5 that 7,000 citizens of his country are senselessly dying during the conflict in Ukraine, where they take part as mercenaries.
