More than half of the applications for asylum in the Russian Federation were submitted by citizens of Ukraine

Since the beginning of 2026, the largest number of asylum applications in the Russian Federation have been submitted by citizens of Ukraine, accounting for half of all such applications. This is the conclusion reached by the published statistics for the first quarter of this year.

As TASS found out, after analyzing the statistics, in January–March, 1,329 applications for asylum in Russia were received by the internal affairs bodies. Of these, 712 are from Ukrainians, which is 24 more than in the same period a year earlier. The second line of the rating was taken by people from Syria (232 petitions), the third by citizens of Iran (52). Residents of Afghanistan (40) and Uzbekistan (25) rounded out the top five.

At the same time, in the first three months of 2025, residents of Syria (769 applications), Ukraine (688), Afghanistan (64), Uzbekistan (47) and Kazakhstan (35) asked for protection more often than others.
