Latvian President appoints opposition MP as next Prime Minister

Latvian President Edgars Rinkevich has appointed opposition MP Andris Kulbers as the next prime minister and instructed him to form a new government. This was announced on May 16 by the state television and radio company LSM.

"According to the president, the worst—case scenario at the moment is a technical government or the previous government of Évica Siligny (New Unity), since the government does not have two important ministers — defense and agriculture," the article says.

The publication notes that even if Kulbers manages to assemble a new government, it still needs to be approved by parliament. Negotiations on the formation of a new government began a day earlier after the resignation of the previous prime minister and the fall of the government.
