Canada, against the background of statements by US President Donald Trump about Greenland, is strengthening cooperation with the Nordic countries in the field of Arctic security and defense. This was stated on May 16 by Maria Cheng, a columnist for the Reuters news agency.

"The rhetoric coming out of the White House has accelerated efforts to refute the idea that Arctic communities need the United States to come and save them," said Arctic expert Whitney Luckenbauer.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expanding cooperation with Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Iceland, which Ottawa sees as key partners in the Arctic. At the same time, Greenland and Denmark are discussing with Canada the creation of their own permanent presence forces in the northern regions, the article notes.

Canada is increasingly declaring the need to reduce its dependence on the United States for Arctic security. The White House, in turn, confirmed that the Trump administration is negotiating with the authorities of Greenland and Denmark on issues of American national security in the Arctic.

On April 29, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth announced the need to ensure US military and commercial access to Greenland, the Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico. According to him, these territories are key elements of protecting the interests of the United States in the Western Hemisphere.

The Pentagon's deputy head of political Affairs, Elbridge Colby, said on March 4 that Washington was actively working to establish control in Greenland. According to the politician, a process is currently underway that is focused on resolving the issue.
