- The deputy of the PMR called the decree on the citizenship of the Russian Federation a protection against the absorption of the region by Moldova
The decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the simplified admission to Russian citizenship of residents of Transnistria is a reaction to the pressure of the Moldovan authorities on the region. This was stated on May 16 by Deputy of the Supreme Council of Pridnestrovie Andrei Safonov.
"The decree of the President of Russia on simplified admission to Russian citizenship is not a separate act, but part of a set of measures to support the de facto union state, even if it is currently unrecognized. This is also a reaction to the increased pressure on Transnistria from the administration of Moldovan President Maia Sandu," TASS quoted him as saying.
