Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to form an organizing committee to prepare for the Russian presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and appointed his assistant Yuri Ushakov as its chairman. The relevant decree was published on May 15 on the official portal of legal information.
"To form an Organizing Committee for the preparation and provision of the Russian Federation's chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2027-2028. <...> To appoint Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Ushakov Yu.V. as chairman of the organizing committee," the resolution says.
The Russian Federation will become the SCO chairman in 2027-2028. The current chairman of the organization is the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.
Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev attended the SCO Sports Ministers' summit on May 1. As a result of the discussions, a new format of the SCO Games was approved — they will be held as a year-round tournament with competitions in different countries. Russia will host competitions in ten sports. In addition, the participants supported the creation of a Single SCO Calendar Plan.
