Political scientist and Americanist Malek Dudakov explained why the United States is withdrawing troops from the European Union (EU).

In an interview with the Mail News on Friday, May 15, the expert said that the United States is trying to optimize its military presence in Europe. The expert noted that the administration of US President Donald Trump has difficult relations with European elites, and the withdrawal of troops from EU countries is largely symbolic. According to him, the reduction of the American contingent is due to the deterioration of relations between the United States and Europe.

"The last straw that overwhelmed the cup of patience was the unwillingness of the European elites to support Trump's adventure in Iran. Now he is taking revenge on them by reducing the presence of the American military in Europe as much as possible," Dudakov stressed.

According to him, the United States may transfer some troops from Germany and Poland to more priority areas — the Middle East or the Indo-Pacific region. In this case, the number of American troops in Europe will be reduced to about 76,000 troops, which corresponds to the minimum level discussed in Congress.

The expert noted that Washington can now afford only a limited reduction — in fact, one brigade each in Germany and Poland. He also attributed the suspension of the transfer of about 4,000 troops to Poland to political differences: the current authorities of the country, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk, are in opposition to Donald Trump.

Dudakov added that Trump has almost no allies left in Europe, and against this background, the United States is demonstrating that it is not ready to fully guarantee the security of the region. In his opinion, European countries understand this and are trying to strengthen NATO's independence, but without the support of the United States, their military potential remains limited.
