Experts have warned about the consequences of car tire wear

Car tires are a technically complex product, the properties of which change over time — the level of traction decreases, the risk of aquaplaning increases, as well as noise during movement. Experts from the Cordiant tire company told Izvestia about this on May 15.

"When the tread is worn, first of all, the level of grip on the road decreases — this becomes especially noticeable when maneuvering, accelerating and braking on slippery surfaces. The car handles worse, the braking distance increases, demolition or skidding may occur unexpectedly, and driver assistance systems, especially when actively driving, will work more often, preventing a dangerous situation," the experts explained.

Also, with heavily worn tires, the risk of aquaplaning increases. On new tires, this phenomenon may not be noticeable, but if, when driving at high speed through areas filled with water, there is a feeling that the car is "floating", such tires must be replaced, experts said. The recommended minimum tread height, which ensures safety on wet roads, is 3 mm.

"Another negative component of worn tires is noise when driving. The consequence is not the most obvious, however, in practice, it is not uncommon for tires to make more noise at a certain stage of wear — this is due to the abrasion of the tread elements, which are designed to reduce the formation or propagation of sound waves," the experts shared.

In addition, with severe aging of the rubber compound (this occurs when storage conditions are violated or when tires are approaching 10 years old), traction properties also suffer, experts noted. If the tire was released a long time ago, its mixture most likely does not have the elasticity properties that were previously provided, and this reduces the level of grip, even if the tire is not worn on the tread.

It should also be borne in mind that tires are subjected to high loads during operation, and on worn tires, after several seasons of use, the frame (tire base) no longer has its original strength, and the risk of damage increases when driving through road bumps, resulting in bulges, the company warned.
