The United States and China have reached an understanding on both the Iranian and Taiwan issues. This was announced on May 15 by US President Donald Trump.
"We talked about Taiwan, Iran, and I think we have a very good understanding on both [topics]," he said.
Trump explained that Chinese President Xi Jinping had "talked a lot" about Taiwan, according to the American leader, China would not want the situation with the island to lead to a war of independence. The head of the White House indicated that he respectfully listened to the "persistent position" of the PRC, but did not make any promises on the sale of American weapons to the Chinese island province.
Trump also pointed out that on the issue of the Middle East conflict, the United States and China allegedly agree that Iran should not have nuclear weapons. The American president stressed that Xi was "very categorical" on this issue. According to Trump, the Chinese president would like the Strait of Hormuz to be open for trade. It follows from his words by the head of the White House that China believes that the strait is closed by the Iranians, and the United States, in turn, "closed" Iran.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with NBC News on May 14 that the U.S. position on Taiwan has not changed since the meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing. He pointed out that China had tried to raise this issue during the negotiations. At the same time, according to him, the issue of the island's independence did not occupy a "prominent place" during the discussion.
Trump arrived in China on a state visit on May 13. This visit was the first visit by an American leader to China in the last nine years. Later, China Central Television reported that the negotiations had ended.
