Russian President Vladimir Putin tested European politicians on their political sensitivity when he proposed former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a negotiator with Russia on Ukraine. This was announced on May 15 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

On May 9, Putin named Schroeder as Europe's preferred negotiator for contacts with Moscow. The next day, the German authorities rejected his candidacy.
