- CBS News has learned about the US intention to bring charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro
The United States is taking steps to charge 94-year-old former Cuban President Raul Castro. This was reported on May 14 by CBS News TV channel, citing sources.
"The potential indictment, which must be approved by a grand jury, is expected to focus on Cuba's deadly 1996 downing of planes belonging to the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue." — the publication says.
It is noted that the US Department of Justice declined to comment on this information.
In 2021, Raul Castro officially resigned as leader of the Communist Party of Cuba. At the same time, the politician continues to be one of the most influential figures in the country.
The Axios portal reported on February 18 that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in secret talks with Guillermo Rodriguez Castro— the grandson and temporary guardian of Raul Castro. It is specified that the contacts are taking place against the background of unprecedented pressure from Washington on Havana.
