- The United States transported uranium from Venezuela to its nuclear test site in South Carolina.
The United States has completed an operation to export highly enriched uranium reserves from Venezuela for its subsequent disposal at the Savannah River facility in South Carolina. The US State Department announced this on its website on May 14.
"The United States, in partnership with Venezuela and the United Kingdom, with the technical support of the IAEA, has successfully extracted excess highly enriched uranium (HEU) from a closed Venezuelan research reactor... The material was delivered by the UK and arrived safely at the Savannah River landfill in Aiken, South Carolina," the statement said.
It is specified that, under the supervision of the IAEA, materials were exported that were transferred to Venezuela for the development of nuclear energy in the 1960s. The State Department stressed that this operation demonstrates the commitment of the IAEA and the United States to joint efforts to ensure the safety of the world from nuclear threat.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on May 1 that major U.S. oil companies have begun considering the possibility of resuming operations in Venezuela amid rising oil prices and changes in the country's legislation. Investor interest has increased after a sharp rise in oil prices and reforms aimed at attracting foreign capital. An additional factor was the growth of oil supplies to the United States.
