A special holiday on May 16 is Mavra Hotbed: history, traditions, omens
Every year on May 16, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the martyrs Timothy and Mavra of Thebes, the spouses who suffered for the Christian faith during the years of persecution under Emperor Diocletian. In the national calendar, the date was named Mavra Seedling. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Saturday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.
What is the church holiday on May 16?
Timofey and Mavra lived at the turn of the III–IV centuries in the Egyptian Thebaid. According to church tradition, Timothy came from the village of Perapea near Thebes and was the son of a priest. From a young age, he served at the temple, read the Holy Scriptures during divine services, kept church books and copied liturgical texts.
His ministry took place during the period of persecution of Christians, which was unleashed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The authorities demanded that citizens make sacrifices to pagan gods and destroy sacred books.
Shortly before his arrest, Timofey married a girl named Mavra. According to legend, only 20 days had passed after the wedding, when ill-wishers denounced him to the ruler of the Egyptian Thebaid Arianus. The young man was brought to court and demanded to hand over the books he kept. The young man refused, as he understood that in this case the sacred texts would be burned.
For this, Timothy was sentenced to torture and thrown into prison. The ruler hoped that the young man's will could be broken through his family and ordered Mavra to be brought.
But the couple's meeting in the dungeon led to the opposite result. Timothy strengthened Mavra's resolve to remain a Christian. The girl openly confessed her faith in Christ and was also tortured. The life emphasizes that the couple accepted suffering together, remaining faithful to God and each other.
When the torture did not break Timothy and Mavra, Arianus sentenced them to a painful execution. According to legend, the couple spent nine days on crosses and died without renouncing their faith. Later, the Christians ransomed their bodies and buried them with honors.
Traditions of the national holiday Mavra Rassadnitsa on May 16
Saint Mavra's memorial Day in the national calendar was primarily a garden day. In Russia, by May 16, the earth was already warming up enough to plant cabbages. This vegetable occupied an important place in the diet, and the future winter table depended on how the seedlings took root. Hence the "talking" name of the holiday — Mavra Hotbed.
In the morning, the faithful visited the temple and prayed to the martyrs Timothy and Mavra for strengthening their family, patience, loyalty, and help in their labors. After that, they started working in the garden. The cabbage should have been planted by women. It was believed that a "man's hand" could damage the business — the seedlings would not take root, weaken or give a bad head.
The housewives went out into the garden with prayer, worked without unnecessary conversations and tried not to get annoyed. It was customary to transfer sprouts from hand to hand, according to beliefs, such a ritual guaranteed a delicious and juicy harvest. In the evening, the beds were sprinkled with holy water, asking for protection from drought, pests and plant diseases.
By the middle of May, winter stocks of sauerkraut often ran out, and housewives began to cook cabbage soup from young greens. Nettles, sorrel, quinoa, and sometimes other edible herbs were used, which were the first to appear after the cold weather. Hence the other name of the holiday — Mavra Green Cabbage Soup.
Nettles harvested on the Moor were also used for special rituals. The household was lightly whipped with young stalks — the ancestors believed that burning grass dispels weakness, protects against diseases and restores physical strength.
Another popular name for the holiday is Mavra Molochnaya. By the middle of May, the cows went out to graze on fresh grass, and the peasants noticed that the milk was getting fatter, sweeter and more nutritious. On this day, shepherds cooked a special Mavrin milk porridge right in the field. She was considered a symbol of the beginning of the warm season, when cattle gain strength, and more milk, butter and cottage cheese appear in the houses.
What not to do on the feast of the Moor Seedling
In Russia, a number of prohibitions were associated with the Moor Nursery, the violation of which could deprive a person of happiness. First of all, on the memorial day of Timothy and Mavra, who remained faithful to each other even before their deaths, family conflicts were forbidden. The ancestors believed that after such a rift, husband and wife would not be able to reconcile for a long time.
What else you can't do on May 16:
- to be jealous and to arrange checks — distrust can lead to serious discord;
- to start repairs unless absolutely necessary — changes in the house will bring disorder to life;
- to spill milk — health and prosperity will "flow away" with it.;
- There is bread near the garden — crumbs can attract chickens, which pick up seedlings.;
- Buying or accepting handkerchiefs as a gift is a risk of spending the whole year in tears and illnesses.;
- make serious plans — the promises made on this day may not be fulfilled;
- working in the garden with bad thoughts — seedlings will not take root well;
- Washing your hair can get you into trouble.
Folk signs for May 16
At the Moor Breeding Ground, the ancestors carefully observed nature in order to determine by signs what the summer would be like, whether to expect a good harvest. The nightingale was considered the main natural "messenger". On the night of May 16, the peasants tried not to go to bed until they heard his trill — if the bird sang, it meant that summer was already near and they could no longer be afraid of severe cold.
- the oak blossomed earlier than the ash — the summer will be dry;
- The bird cherry trees on the Moor are in full bloom for the hot summer and warm autumn.;
- there is a lot of dew on the grass in the morning — for a rich harvest of cucumbers;
- a clear morning is a good day for gardening;
- fresh herbs grew quickly — the year promises to be generous with vegetables.
