The priest told how to pray properly on Whitsunday
On the day of the Holy Trinity, or Pentecost, which is celebrated on May 31 in 2026, the Orthodox Church emphasizes the importance of communal prayer, the rector of the church of the Apostle and Evangelist Luke in Tver, Anthony Rusakevich, told Izvestia.
"Home prayer is not canceled or limited on a holiday, but on this day it is desirable as a continuation and expansion of the temple conciliarity," he noted.
According to the Book of Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples of Christ at the moment when they were "with one accord together," the priest recalled.
In churches decorated with greenery and flowers on this day, the morning Liturgy is immediately followed by Great Vespers with kneeling prayers. The Church appeals to the Holy Spirit with a request for the transformation of man and the whole world: for cleansing from sins, giving spiritual fruits, inner renewal and reconciliation of people with God.
"This Vespers is the first time believers have knelt after the long Easter period. The divine service takes on the character of deep prayerful humility," Father Anthony noted.
