The former head of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, said that Europe was "completely alone" in the face of a change in US policy after the return of Donald Trump to the presidency. This is reported by the newspaper Politico.

"For the first time in living memory, we were really alone," he said.

According to the former head of the ECB, the United States has become "more hostile and unpredictable" and "may no longer guarantee our security." He called on the European Union (EU) countries to review strategic dependencies and accelerate investments in defense, artificial intelligence and energy infrastructure.

Draghi also warned that the slow decision-making process in the European Union weakens the bloc's ability to respond to new geopolitical challenges.

"Weak implementation undermines legitimacy, and weak legitimacy makes implementation even more difficult. We must break this cycle," he stressed.

The Politico newspaper reported on May 2 that Trump's recent decisions confirmed his desire to "punish" Europe, rather than making compromises that seem less and less possible. According to the publication, there are talks in Europe about the creation of a European Defense Union.
