The expert called the main goal of the negotiations between Washington and Beijing
China is interested in reducing global tensions and developing competition with the United States economically, not militarily. Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, said this in an interview with Izvestia on May 14, commenting on the negotiations between Washington and Beijing.
According to him, Beijing's proposals are based on China's long-term strategy based on economic growth without harsh confrontation with global and regional players.
"China continues to insist on its position that it is necessary to reduce the overall conflict risk around the world and compete economically," the expert noted.
The political scientist stressed that Taiwan remains one of the most controversial issues in relations between the United States and China. At the same time, in his opinion, despite the complexity of the topic, it is not insoluble for the two countries.
He clarified that the Taiwan issue includes several levels — military-strategic, geopolitical and economic, including those related to the production of chips. However, according to the expert, Washington and Beijing can agree on settlement mechanisms.
"This is not an unsolvable issue. Therefore, we should hardly expect a new paradigm of relations now. But it is, of course, quite possible to outline the basic points and model of these relationships," he explained.
The expert also noted that China is not so much trying to seize the initiative in global politics as it is trying to consolidate its own model of interaction with the United States — competition without a direct military clash. According to him, it is premature to talk about a full-fledged rapprochement between the United States and China. The countries remain competitors in a number of areas, so a dramatic improvement in relations is unlikely.
US President Donald Trump arrived in China on a state visit on May 13. The start of negotiations between the leaders became known on May 14. The meeting was held at the People's Assembly House on Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Later, China Central Television reported that the negotiations had ended.
The American leader himself called the negotiations with China excellent. At the same time, the head of the White House preferred not to comment on whether the situation around Taiwan was touched upon during the dialogue.
