Germany called Schroeder's nomination a signal from Russia to Brussels
Moscow is sending signals to Brussels about the possible involvement of Europeans in negotiations on the Ukrainian conflict by offering former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a mediator. The Tagesspiegel newspaper wrote about this on May 13.
"This is not just a personnel decision. This is a well—thought-out political signal, first of all to Europe, and only secondarily to Washington. And also to Kiev. <...> [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is hinting that potential negotiations to end this conflict could be more in the hands of Europe, not just America. This has significant geopolitical significance," the publication says.
