The number of wolves in Transbaikalia has increased significantly. Over the past five years, it has grown 1.4 times. The permissible density is exceeded by 4 times.

A steady increase in the number of animals is recorded despite measures to regulate the population and increase payments for the production of wolves, writes IA ChitaMedia with reference to the legislative assembly of the region.

So, according to the KSP of the region, if in 2021 there were 5.5 thousand individuals, then in 2025 there were 7.5 thousand. The peak value was recorded in 2024, about 7.7 thousand. Over the past year, about 1.1 thousand individuals have been harvested.

According to experts, the reason for the population growth is not only natural factors, but also a decrease in the rural population, a decrease in livestock production and the lack of systematic regulation of the number of these animals.

In addition, experts say that fishing is economically inefficient, since the cost of catching one wolf significantly exceeds the amount of remuneration. Hunters are not interested in population regulation.

The agency notes that in some regions of the Far East, payments for the extraction of wolves are higher than those established in Transbaikalia. This also affects the dynamics of the population.

At the end of March, it was reported that in the Kurgan region, a wolf twice entered the village of Koryukina in the Belozersky district. The predator was seen by local residents and traffic police officers. A hunting specialist went to the village. He shot the animal outside the village.
