Massage rolls, balls, and other self-massage tools help relieve muscle tension and improve blood circulation, but improper use of such devices can lead to microtrauma, increased pain, and tissue damage. Yulia Adenota, a certified massage therapist, told Izvestia about this on May 14.

Risks of improper exposure

Massage rolls, balls, and mechanical massagers are tools for myofascial release. When used correctly, they help to relax muscles through deep pressure, improve blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and metabolic processes in tissues. This helps to reduce puffiness and relieve stiffness, and also helps to act on painful muscle knots — trigger points.

However, excessive diligence in self-massage can lead to microtrauma of muscle fibers and fascia instead of the expected relaxation. Adenota noted that pain should not be a guideline for the effectiveness of the procedure. Too much pressure can cause bruising and tissue injury. Special care should be taken by people with varicose veins, as exposure to the affected areas exacerbates the damage.

Dangerous areas and contraindications

The specialist identified areas of the body that cannot be rolled out with massagers. These include the lower back, joints, and bones, including the knees, elbows, and spine. Improper exposure to the neck is dangerous because of the risk of injury to blood vessels and nerve endings. Also, mechanical tools should not be used for fresh injuries, tendon inflammation, or acute pain, so as not to increase the damage.

"One of the common mistakes is rolling out too fast. The effect of myofascial release is achieved by slow movements, rather than by intense and chaotic exposure," Adenota said.

Prolonged exposure to one area for more than 5-10 minutes is also a mistake and can lead to nerve irritation. Self-massage is contraindicated in oncology, thrombophlebitis, acute infections, fever, severe osteoporosis, aneurysm, open wounds and skin diseases.

Rejuvenation technique

Buccal facial massage is an effective method of rejuvenation without drastic measures. The technique is aimed at deep muscle work, which helps to make the oval of the face clearer, reduce the volume of the cheeks and the severity of the nasolabial folds. After the procedure, the skin may look smoother and more elastic by relieving muscle spasms and toning the tissues.

"After a massage, there should be no bruises, bruises or other marks on the face. A high—quality procedure can cause a feeling of tightness in the muscles of the face, but it soon passes," said Adenota.

She added that facial massage is prohibited in the presence of herpes, skin lesions, infectious and oncological diseases.
