- The media called the shallowing of the Euphrates River a sign of the approaching Armageddon
The Euphrates River is shallow in Iraq, which is mentioned in the biblical Book of Revelation in the context of the events before Armageddon — the end of the world. This was reported by the Metro newspaper on May 11.
The article notes that since 2003, the river basin has lost more than 140 cubic kilometers of fresh water. At the current rate, the Euphrates River may completely dry up by 2040. At the same time, in the biblical prophecy, the drying up of the Euphrates is associated with the opening of the way for "kings from the east" before the "final battle." In the book of Genesis, the Euphrates is also mentioned as one of the four rivers originating in the Garden of Eden.
"For thousands of years, the river has helped feed cities, water crops, and support and maintain trade routes through what is often referred to as the 'cradle of civilization,'" the article says.
Experts also explain the shallowing by frequent droughts, rising temperatures and the active use of water resources. Scientists also attribute the sharp drop in water levels to the severe drought of 2007, the consequences of which have not yet been overcome.
In April, Elmira Imamkuliyeva, Senior lecturer at the Department of Foreign Regional Studies at the Faculty of World Economy and World Politics, Head of the Scientific and Educational Laboratory for Modern Iran Research at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, noted that Iran now has two of the largest freshwater rivers— the Tigris and Euphrates. However, interruptions in the supply of fresh water can create extremely dangerous situations.
