Sabantuy is one of the most ancient holidays of the Turkic peoples. It is dedicated to the end of field work and annually gathers thousands of guests and participants, bringing together people of different nationalities. In 2026, the celebrations will be held from the end of May to the middle of July in different regions of Russia. The largest venues will traditionally open in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, as well as in Moscow, St. Petersburg and a number of other cities. For more information about how the holiday will be held, about its history and traditions, see the Izvestia article.

What is the Sabantuy holiday and its significance?

Sabantuy is a traditional holiday of the Tatar and Bashkir peoples, which has ancient agricultural roots. It originated among the Turkic peoples many centuries ago. Historically, it was held after the completion of spring field work. In the interval between sowing and haymaking, the Tatars gathered for one or two weeks to relax, chat with each other and pray for a good harvest.

The name of the holiday is derived from the Turkic words: "saban" — plow and "tui" — holiday. Thus, Sabantuy is a celebration of labor, respect for the land and unity of people. In the modern world, it has long gone beyond a national event and has become an international cultural holiday uniting representatives of different nations.

Nowadays, it is celebrated not only by the Turkic peoples of the Volga region, the Urals and Siberia, but also by representatives of other nationalities living in Russia and abroad — in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Germany and the USA.

When and where to celebrate Sabantuy in 2026: dates and regions

Sabantuy does not have a fixed date, as it is directly related to the completion of spring work. That is why the holiday takes place on different days in different regions, most often between the end of May and the middle of July. The geography of the celebrations covers dozens of regions of the country, and the celebrations themselves take place both in villages and in large cities. At the same time, even in an urban environment, the holiday retains its main feature — a warm, family atmosphere and respect for folk traditions.

The central event of the holiday remains the Federal Sabantuy, the largest event hosted annually by a new region. This format has been held since 2001 and is aimed at strengthening interregional ties. Its main symbol is the winged horse Tulpar, one of the most recognizable images of Turkic mythology. Every year, the bronze statuette is solemnly handed over from the host region to the next, symbolizing the continuity of traditions and cultural unity of the peoples of Russia.

The founders and main organizers of the Federal Sabantuy in Russia are traditionally the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan together with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan and the World Congress of Tatars, as well as the administration of the region where the holiday is being held this year.

In 2026, the XXVI Federal Sabantuy will be held on July 18 in Omsk, on the territory of the Green Island Park. The Omsk region was chosen as the venue for a reason. One of the oldest Tatar villages in the region, Ashevany, is celebrating its 800th anniversary this year, and the event was timed to coincide with this date. Concerts, folk festivals, fairs, as well as competitions in national sports, including koresh wrestling, a type of martial arts on sash belts, common among the Turkic peoples, are waiting for guests.

In parallel, the All-Russian rural Sabantuy is developing, focused on preserving rural traditions. It has been held since 2010 with the support of the head (RAISA) Tatarstan's Rustam Minnikhanov and also annually changes the site. In total, there are 4.2 thousand Tatar villages in Russia, and this format is of particular importance to them. In 2025, the Kirov region hosted the holiday, and in 2026, the XVI All-Russian Rural Sabantuy will be held on June 27 in the Penza region, in the village of Maly Truev.

Sabantuy will be actively celebrated in other regions of Russia. The key region traditionally remains the Republic of Tatarstan, where Sabantuy is celebrated in three stages. This format will continue in 2026. Residents of villages and district centers will be the first to celebrate the holiday on June 6 and 7. Then, on June 13, major cities of the republic, including Naberezhnye Chelny, will take over the baton. The festive cycle will end on June 20 in Kazan, where the main republican holiday will be held.

A broad program is planned in the Republic of Bashkortostan. In 2026, the festivities will cover 54 municipalities and will last almost a month and a half — from May 30 to July 18. Each district of the republic organizes its own holiday with an emphasis on folk traditions.

In major cities, including Ufa, Sabantuy will take on the format of a large-scale festival with concerts, invited artists and a modern stage program. In Moscow, the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve traditionally becomes the main venue, where a large-scale ethnofestival is held with the support of the city authorities and national communities. The date of the event has not yet been officially announced.

The history of Sabantuy

Sabantuy is a holiday with an ancient history. The first written mention of it dates back to the beginning of the 10th century. It was left by the Arab traveler and ambassador Ibn Fadlan, who arrived in the city of Bulgar on the territory of modern Tatarstan. He described the traditions of the locals, including folk celebrations related to the agrarian calendar.

Before the adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria in 922, Sabantuy was a pagan holiday and was accompanied by various rituals, including sacrifices. In this way, farmers sought to appease the spirits, on whom, according to ancient beliefs, the future harvest and the well-being of the community depended.

Over time, the old rituals disappeared, and the timing of the celebration shifted. Previously, Sabantuy was celebrated in April, before the start of the sowing season, but after the adoption of Islam, it began to be held later, in early May, during the sowing season. And the ritual offerings were replaced by the tradition of giving gifts.

In the villages there was a special rite of collecting gifts. In the spring, on the eve of the holiday, young people went around the yards and collected gifts — shawls, hats, tablecloths and bedspreads — prizes for future winners of the competitions. An embroidered towel with a national ornament was considered the most honorable. Traditionally, it was prepared by a young woman who got married after the previous Sabantuy. Such a towel was given to the winner of the fight, which was a special honor for both the fighter and the craftswoman.

During the period of the Kazan Khanate (from 1438 to 1552) Sabantuy was finally formed as a national holiday. It has become one of the most massive national celebrations, completing the agricultural cycle, a symbol of respect for labor, the land and the people working on it.

In Soviet times, Sabantuy retained its popularity, although it adapted to new conditions. New traditions have appeared in the holiday program, including honoring people of labor — grain growers, machine operators, livestock breeders, rural teachers, doctors, war and labor veterans. In 1990, Sabantuy was officially included in the list of republican holidays of Tatarstan, and two years later — Bashkortostan.

The real surge in interest in Sabantuy occurred after 1995, when Russian President Boris Yeltsin first took part in it, and then Vladimir Putin in 2001.

How to celebrate Sabantuy: the main traditions and competitions

Modern Sabantuy preserves the main traditions of the national holiday, while acquiring a larger and more organized format. In March 2026, new requirements for the event were introduced in the Republic of Tatarstan. In particular, special attention is now being paid to the reconstruction of traditional Tatar dwellings. Not only the size of buildings is regulated, but also the materials used in their construction.

The purpose of these changes is to prevent Sabantuy from becoming an entertainment show and preserve it as part of a living cultural heritage based on historical traditions and folk culture.

The central venue of the celebration is still the Maidan, an open space where key events, concerts and sports competitions take place. It is here that participants and guests from different regions of Russia gather, forming the main festive space of Sabantuy.

The program is based on sports and gaming competitions. The most famous and revered type remains the national koresh wrestling. The fight is often started by two boys, then the boys and men compete according to seniority. The tournament ends with a duel of the strongest batyr wrestlers.

Horse racing is also held on the Maidan, one of the oldest competitions dating back to the nomadic culture. Boys aged 8-12 often become riders, which underlines the continuity of traditions. Along with this, running competitions, various folk games and fun are held, for example, running with a yoke and buckets full of water, fighting with sacks of hay on a log, tug of war, climbing a tall smooth pole for a prize, and smashing a clay pot blindfolded.

Elders play a historically important role in the organization of Sabantuy. They are the ones who monitor the observance of traditions, determine the rules of competitions and participate in the appointment of judges. Their task is to ensure the fair conduct of competitions and preserve the established order of the holiday, which has been developing for centuries.

The holiday is accompanied by a rich cultural program, which includes performances by folklore groups, pop artists, dance performances and theatrical performances. There are also fairs and craft halls on the territory, where craftsmen present handicrafts. Recreation areas and playgrounds with national cuisine are organized for guests.

What is prepared for the holiday: culinary customs, traditional dishes

Traditional cuisine on Sabantuy occupies no less a place than competitions. Guests are treated to meat dishes, pastries and sweets, which symbolize prosperity and hospitality.

The main treat is meat dishes made from mutton, beef or poultry. An indispensable attribute of the festive table is Tatar pilaf on mutton with the addition of tomato paste or vegetables. Rich soups are also common, which are prepared in large cauldrons: shurpa — lamb soup with strong meat broth, tokmach — noodle soup with chicken broth, shulyum — beef soup with vegetables.

Other popular treats include: peremech — the most delicate meat pies, the feature of which is a small hole on top; belish — a closed pie with meat, potatoes and onions, which is often served with broth; kystybyi — fried unleavened tortillas with stuffing.

The main dessert is chak-chak, one of the most famous Tatar delicacies. It is made from pieces of dough fried in oil and doused with honey. Tatars from different regions have their own variations of sweets. For example, among the Siberian Tatars, baursak (bavyrsak) is common — fried pieces of dough that can be served as an independent delicacy or together with honey.

Among the traditional drinks on Sabantuy are koumiss (fermented mare's milk), ayran and katyk (fermented milk drinks). They quench thirst well in summer weather and complement hearty meat dishes.

Who is being congratulated and how to participate

Anyone can take part in the Sabantuy, regardless of nationality and age. To do this, it is enough to come to the festive site on the day of the event. Admission is free in most regions, and free shuttles from public transport stops are provided for guests.

Participants can not only watch competitions and concerts, but also try their hand at folk games, get to know the culture, traditions, cuisine of different nations, and also congratulate relatives and friends on the national holiday.

On this day, it is customary to congratulate farmers on the successful completion of sowing, elders who preserve wisdom and traditions, wrestlers and horsemen with their strength and dexterity, newlyweds with the beginning of family life, as well as relatives, friends and colleagues who belong to the Turkic peoples or live in regions where Sabantuy is celebrated.

Usually on a holiday they wish you health, well-being, prosperity, good luck in your work and a good harvest. And for those who have not yet started a family, personal happiness. In this regard, Sabantui can be a good start for starting a relationship, as it has long been considered a favorable time for new acquaintances.

According to popular belief, a meeting held during a holiday can be the beginning of a strong and long-lasting relationship. Therefore, Sabantuy is perceived not only as a time of competitions and folk festivals, but also as an opportunity for young people to meet their destiny.
