Four members of the Jehovah's Witnesses sect (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) were detained in Crimea, who clandestinely recruited new members to the organization and collected donations. This was reported on May 12 in the office of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol.

"Illegal activities were identified and suppressed by the operational staff of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol and the Center for Countering Extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea," the statement said.

A criminal case has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Organization of the activities of a religious association against which a court has decided to liquidate for extremism").
