The Spanish Ministry of Health announced the extension of quarantine for passengers of the MV Hondius liner

The quarantine of 14 Spaniards evacuated from the MV Hondius liner, which previously experienced an outbreak of hantavirus, will last 42 days, starting on May 6. This was announced on May 11 by Javier Padilla, Secretary of State for Health, on RNE Radio.

"The key point is to determine the starting point, that is, the first day when we will start counting 42 days. This date was set on May 6," he said.

The Secretary stressed that the quarantine start date will be adjusted depending on the detection of positive cases. He clarified that passengers arriving from the MV Hondius liner will be under strict restrictions for seven days.

The MV Hondius liner, where an outbreak of hantavirus was recorded at the beginning of the month, arrived at the shores of the Spanish island on May 10 to evacuate. It was reported that at least three deaths of passengers from a strain that may be called "Andes" were detected on the ship.

On May 9, Reuters reported that two suspected cases of hantavirus infection had been identified in Spain and the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean. It was clarified that these people are not related to the MV Hondius liner, where the outbreak occurred earlier.

On May 10, the Russian embassy in Madrid reported that a Russian from the crew of the liner on which the outbreak of the virus was recorded would remain on board the ship until the Netherlands, where disinfection would be carried out.
