An employee of the Spanish Civil Guard who participated in the evacuation of passengers of the MV Hondius cruise ship during the hantavirus outbreak has died of a heart attack. This was announced on May 10 by the head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the social network X (former. Twitter).

According to him, the employee participated in the operation of the Spanish authorities, which was carried out in coordination with WHO. People were evacuated from the MV Hondius ship in the port of Puerto de Granadilla in southern Tenerife and taken to the airport for subsequent repatriation.

Ghebreyesus clarified that after the heart attack, emergency services personnel who were on the dock immediately began resuscitation measures. However, the man could not be saved.

The MV Hondius liner, where an outbreak of hantavirus was recorded at the beginning of the month, arrived at the shores of the Spanish island on May 10 to evacuate. It was reported that at least three deaths of passengers from a strain that may be called "Andes" were detected on the ship.

On May 9, Reuters reported that two suspected cases of hantavirus infection had been identified in Spain and the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean. It was clarified that these people are not related to the MV Hondius liner, where the outbreak occurred earlier.

On May 10, the Russian embassy in Madrid reported that a Russian from the crew of the liner on which the outbreak of the virus was recorded would remain on board the ship until the Netherlands, where disinfection would be carried out.
