Pashinyan pointed out that there is no need to hold an EU referendum in Armenia.
Armenia is still a full member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and there is currently no need to hold a referendum on relations with the European Union (EU) and Russia. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this at a briefing on May 11.
According to the politician, he has already discussed this topic at a working level with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"We are full-fledged members of the EAEU and, as long as we remain part of it, we take part in all processes. At the moment, there is no need to raise this issue, and we are not preparing to put it on the agenda," Sputnik Armenia agency quoted him as saying.
At the same time, Pashinyan expressed disagreement with the metaphor "divorce" used by the Russian president and stressed that Yerevan proceeds from issues of interstate logic and noted that "interstate relations should not be confused with marriage." The Armenian Prime Minister also clarified that the referendum will be held only if there is an objective need.
On the same day, former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan said that Yerevan should not enter into an open confrontation with Russia. In his opinion, Russia is a big and patient country, but there are many examples when it did not forgive certain actions.
Putin said on May 9 that relations between Russia and Armenia have been special for centuries. He also expressed the opinion that it would be logical to hold a referendum in Armenia on the development of cooperation with the EU in order to ask the citizens of the country what their choice would be. According to him, in accordance with this, Russia would have drawn the appropriate conclusions and would have followed the path of a "gentle, intelligent and mutually beneficial divorce."
