- The media reported on the check of the Pole after possible contact with the passenger of the MV Hondius
A Polish resident was placed under sanitary supervision due to possible contact with a passenger of the cruise ship MV Hondius, on board of which there was an outbreak of hantavirus. This was reported on Sunday, May 10, by the local radio station RMF24.
"In Poland, one person has been placed under sanitary supervision in connection with possible contact with a passenger on a cruise ship carrying hantavirus," the publication says.
According to the radio station, the Pole showed no symptoms of the virus. However, he will be monitored for seven days.
On May 9, Reuters reported that two suspected cases of hantavirus infection had been identified in Spain and the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean. According to the agency, a woman with suspected hantavirus lives in the Spanish province of Alicante, and a man lives on the islands of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It was clarified that these people are not related to the MV Hondius liner, where the outbreak occurred earlier.
In early May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an outbreak of hantavirus aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, en route from the Argentine port of Ushuaia to Cape Verde. At the moment, three deaths have been confirmed (a married couple from the Netherlands and a German citizen).
