On May 10, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silin offered the post of Minister of Defense to Colonel Raivis Melnis, who is currently working in Ukraine.

"Defense Minister Andris Sprouds has lost my trust and the trust of the public. I have decided to demand the resignation of the Minister of Defense. From now on, the defense sector should be headed by a professional," said Silinya.

She noted that the drone incident clearly showed that the political leadership of the defense sector had not fulfilled its promise to ensure safe skies over Latvia.

The prime minister noted that Melnis had agreed to take up the post. His experience of serving in the National Armed Forces, military education in London and current work in Ukraine give confidence that the country's defense will be managed competently and purposefully, she added.

On the same day, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced his resignation after the downing of two Ukrainian drones near Rezekne, which damaged an oil depot. On the night of May 7, a drone crashed on the territory of an oil depot in the city of Rezekne in the eastern part of Latvia. According to Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds, drones "directed from the Ukrainian side towards Russia" could fly into the republic. As a result of the incident, four empty tanks were damaged. A criminal case has been opened into the incident.

On May 7, the Latvian Foreign Ministry summoned Dmitry Kasatkin, Charge d'affaires of Russia in the republic, and handed him a note of protest over the downing of Ukrainian drones on the territory of the Baltic Republic.
