Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to appoint former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a mediator in possible negotiations between Russia and the European Union should be welcomed. This opinion was expressed on May 10 by Sevim Dagdelen, a foreign policy expert of the BSW party.

"This is a very big gesture that Russian President Putin is making, signaling to Germany that in the person of former Chancellor Schroeder as a mediator, it would be possible to really move towards peace talks," Dagdelen told TASS.

She said that at the moment there is silence on the German side towards Russia, so it would be extremely important to resume dialogue. The expert called the proposal worthy of being welcomed, as it brings movement to German-Russian relations. Dagdelen noted that a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine would be very good news for the whole of Europe.

On May 9, Putin named Schroeder as Europe's preferred negotiator for contacts with Moscow. Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, added on May 7 that attitudes towards establishing a diplomatic dialogue with the Russian side may change in Europe.

The German newspaper Berliner Zeitung reported on April 27 that Berlin should strive to start a dialogue with Russia, in particular with its president. The Russian leader, in turn, on the same day pointed out Moscow's desire for dialogue with constructive political forces in the world.
