According to the results of the regional elections, the Scottish National Party (SNP) won 58 seats in parliament. This was reported on May 9 by the British edition of The Independent.

"The party of [Scottish First Minister] John Swinney won 58 seats, which is less than the 65 required to obtain an absolute majority, but still became the largest party in the Scottish Parliament," the publication says.

The Labour Party and the UK Reform Party each won 17 seats, while the Scottish Greens won 15. The Conservatives won 12 seats in Holyrood, the Liberal Democrats - 10.

The former first minister and leader of the Scottish Nationalists, Hamza Yousaf, announced his resignation on April 29 due to the threat of a vote of no confidence from opposition parties. The politician has repeatedly called for Scotland's independence from the United Kingdom due to the decline of the kingdom.

The BBC Broadcasting Corporation announced on May 7 that Swinney had assumed the post of head of the Scottish government following a vote in parliament. His candidacy was supported by 64 out of 129 parliamentarians. Among those who voted for the politician are all SNP members and the only representative of the Alba party in parliament, founded by former SNP leader Alex Salmond. Despite the fact that the Green MPs abstained from voting, Swinney won more votes than the other candidates combined.
