On May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech on Red Square in honor of the anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. Traditionally, representatives of foreign countries also take part in the celebrations. The main statements of the Russian leader are in the material of Izvestia.

About the memory of the Great Victory

Putin congratulated all those involved, as well as the participants of his Victory Day, on "our sacred, bright and most important holiday."

"We celebrate it with feelings of pride and love for our country, with an understanding of our common duty to protect the interests and future of the motherland. We celebrate with sincere filial gratitude to the great generation of winners. We sacredly honor the precepts and legacy of the soldiers of victory," Putin said.

He added that taking care of the Fatherland brings together the whole of Russia and its people put an end to the total and merciless evil, returned to the sovereignty of those States which capitulated to Nazi Germany, turned into a submissive partners of her crimes.

"In the name of freedom and dignity of the peoples of Europe, he became the epitome of courage and nobility, perseverance and humanity, and crowned himself with the great glory of a grand victory.

About the Great Patriotic War

The Russian President recalled that June 22, 1941, was one of the most tragic and mournful dates in the history of Russia. This year it will be 85 years since the Great Patriotic War began.

He also noted that everyone remembers the steadfastness of soldiers, sailors and officers, the dedication of members of the people's militia, partisans and underground fighters, the gigantic efforts of the home front, science, industry, and rural workers.

"The front and rear were united. The genuine patriotism, courage and sacrifice of the people raised them above the enemy, gave them strength and strengthened their faith in victory, it was won, suffered and won. All this lives in family stories, in the hearts of our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in the memory of each of us. We bow our heads to those who fell in battle, to those who were tortured during the occupation and in captivity, who died of starvation in besieged Leningrad, in other besieged cities and towns, to all those who gave their lives for their homeland, for Russia. We bow our heads before the memory of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends.

About the victory

Putin said that no matter how the techniques and methods of combat change, the main thing remains unchanged — the fate of the country is decided by people, soldiers and factory workers, workers of rural enterprises, gunsmiths and military personnel, doctors and teachers, cultural figures and clergymen, volunteers, entrepreneurs, philanthropists.

"All Russian citizens are the key to success, our moral strength, courage and valor, our solidarity and ability to withstand everything, overcome any challenges. We have a common goal, everyone makes a personal contribution to the victory. It is forged both on the battlefield and in the rear," the Russian president said, expressing confidence that victory has always been and always will be ours.
