The fate of the crew of the plane that crashed during the Great Patriotic War has been established in Sochi.

Employees of the Sochi National Park, together with a group of the Krasnodar Regional public search organization Kuban Bridgehead, found the number of the U-2 aircraft and determined the fate of its crew, which crashed during the Great Patriotic War (WWII) in the Sochi area. This was announced on May 8 in the press service of the Sochi National Park.

"The most important thing is that it has become known for certain that the pilot and the technician are still alive. Clarifying this fact was the main goal of the search efforts," the National Park's website says.

The text notes that over 10 years ago, a U-2 plane crashed in the area of Istoma, but its number and the fate of the crew could not be determined. It was assumed that the pilots died on the spot as a result of the accident. Later, the crash site was discovered thanks to the memories of one of the members of the search group, as a result, the wreckage of the ship with its number was found behind a grove of rhododendrons.

It was established that the pilot P.Z. Zagrebnyak and the technician Krysin were on board the vessel, his name and patronymic could not be established. Thanks to the archives, the researchers were able to establish that the aircraft was used to deliver mail. On November 2, 1942, the plane took off from Adler airfield in the direction of Krasnaya Polyana and crashed in the vicinity of Istoma. It is noted that the landing was most likely an emergency, and the flight itself was a test flight after the engine was repaired.

It is added that after carrying out an inventory of the crash site, the wreckage will be transferred to one of the Sochi museums.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported a day earlier that the Center military group had restored more than 80 monuments, mass graves and memorials in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) for the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The military cleaned the walls, repaired the paths, restored the figures of soldiers and tinted the elements of the memorials. It is noted that the work was carried out on the initiative of military personnel in their free time from combat missions.
