Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said on May 8 that the truce between Russia and Ukraine from May 9 to 11 was achieved thanks to contacts between the Russian and American sides, as well as Washington's interaction with Kiev.

"An agreement on this matter was reached during our telephone contacts with the administration of the President of the United States. Representatives of the United States, in turn, were in touch with Kiev," he told reporters.

Ushakov noted that this agreement was a development of the ideas that were voiced in the conversation between Russian and American leaders Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Earlier in the day, Trump expressed hope that a truce between Russia and Ukraine could begin to end the conflict. The head of the White House added that at the designated time, on his initiative, the parties will also make an exchange of prisoners.

Ushakov announced on May 8 that Russia had agreed to support Trump's initiative to extend the truce with Ukraine until May 11. He clarified that Moscow had also agreed to conduct a prisoner exchange with Kiev in the "1,000 to 1,000" format during this period.
