American plans to reconcile the two influential families of Dbeiba and Haftar in Libya are related to the desire to gain control over the extraction and processing of resources, Danila Krylov, a researcher at INION RAS, told Izvestia. Washington's interest, according to him, is fueled by the energy crisis — if Libya, which has huge oil reserves, leaves OPEC+, the organization will cease to control anything.

"The United States is trying to kill several birds with one stone: get a new source of oil, weaken Libya, leaving Turkey, France, China and other forces out of business, and most importantly, squeeze Russia out of Africa," the expert explained.

According to the plan of the administration of US President Donald Trump, the unification of Libya should take place through the reconciliation of two influential families in the country — the Bbeib, who control most of the west of Libya with Tripoli as their capital, and Haftar, who controls the east of the country.

"The Americans want to make a very clever knight's move: for the current leadership of the Government of National Unity and the Libyan National Army to transfer powers to successors who supposedly should work together," the source explained.

Such an approach, in his opinion, carries a fundamental risk of delegitimizing power, because in the East, uniting around a strong leader is the basis of all relations. And if there is no such leader, the situation "will disintegrate into a patchwork of clans and clans."

"Do Americans understand the specifics of inter-clan cooperation in Libya? I wouldn't count on it much. But they will try. Most likely, we will get another conflict zone," Krylov summed up.
