In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Folk signs for May 13
In folk tradition, May 13 was called Yakov the Warm. This day was associated with the onset of steady warmth and the final farewell to the spring cold. It was believed that after Jacob, frosts no longer return, and nature finally awakens. Hence the name — "Warm", which emphasized the weather changes.
The peasants were guided by this date when planning agricultural work. The active sowing season began, on the success of which the whole year depended. Working in the field required a lot of time and effort, so weddings and matchmaking stopped at that time. It was considered bad luck to get married in the last month of spring. This belief is reflected in the saying: "To get married in May is to spend your whole life worrying."
There were also special rituals for Jacob the Warm aimed at improving health. For example, on a holiday it was customary to pour water from the melted March snow. For this purpose, the snow has been specially stored in barrels and other containers since the first days of spring. People believed that such water, which absorbed the power of awakening nature, could ward off any ailment.
Special attention was paid to weather signs. The people said: "It's warm on Yakov, and summer is good," "Like Yakov, so is summer." If the day was clear and warm, they expected a good summer and a rich harvest of bread. And rainy weather was perceived as a harbinger of a wet season.

- morning dew does not dry out for a long time — there may be a thunderstorm;
- strong wind leads to changeable weather in the coming weeks;
- thunder rumbles — heavy precipitation in summer;

What not to do on May 13
There were many prohibitions and warnings associated with the day of James the Warm. Our ancestors believed that violating these rules could lead to failures in the household and deprive the family of well-being. On this day, they were afraid to be lazy, believing that inaction would "scare away" luck. They also avoided showing negative emotions — otherwise, according to beliefs, everything would go down the drain.
What else can not be done on May 13:

What is the church holiday on May 13th?
On May 13 (April 30, Old Style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Apostle James Zebedee, one of the 12 apostles who was one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. He was the brother of John the Theologian, with whom he earned his living by fishing, and then followed the Savior, witnessing the most important events of the gospel history.
James preached in Spain, after which he returned to his native Jerusalem. There he boldly denounced the Pharisees and scribes for their cruelty, converting many people to Christianity. The apostle's words were so convincing that the Jews hired the philosopher-magus Hermogenes for a dispute, but when he saw the power of God, he burned his magic books and was baptized.
The angry pagans convinced King Herod Agrippa to execute the apostle. As a result, he was beheaded, becoming the first martyr among the apostles. One of the informers named Josiah publicly repented of what he had done and was executed along with Jacob around the age of 44.
On the same day, St. Donatus, Bishop of Evria, is remembered. He lived in the IV century and became famous for numerous miracles. According to legend, one day the saint expelled a huge snake from the spring, after which he blessed the water and drank it himself without harm. Another time, during a severe drought, he prayed to the Lord for abundant rain.
In addition, the saint opposed pagan traditions, contributing to the establishment of the Christian faith. He was revered as a wise mentor who guided people to the path of truth, and was also credited with the gift of healing the sick.
Prayers on May 13th
Believers turn to the Apostle James with prayers for the gift of courage, patience and for strengthening faith in times of trial. Since the apostle traveled far, he is considered the patron saint of all travelers. They pray to St. Donatus for deliverance from ailments and help in everyday needs. Both saints are also asked to intercede with the Lord.
