The Russian military prevented an attempt to attack the civilian infrastructure of St. Petersburg by destroying a Ukrainian drone that flew into the airspace from Latvia. This was reported on May 7 by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in the Maks messenger.

It is noted that the means of electronic reconnaissance of the Aerospace Forces (VKS) spotted a group of six drones in the sky over Latvia at about 3:20 Moscow time. At the same time, foreign fighter planes were also spotted there - two French Rafale and two American F-16.

After that, at about 4:00 Moscow time, five of the six drones disappeared from radar near the Latvian city of Rezekne. The remaining drone crossed the border of the Russian Federation, where at 4:41 Moscow time it was eliminated by Russian air defenses near the village of Likhachevo, Pskov region. According to the wreckage of the device, experts found out that this is a drone of the AN-196 "Fierce" model, which is produced on the territory of Ukraine.

Earlier on May 7, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) attempted to attack civilian facilities in the St. Petersburg area from the territory of Latvia. On the same day, the agency said that in four hours, the air defense forces shot down 127 Ukrainian drones in various regions of Russia.
