Bloomberg pointed to the US plans to start producing oil under its military bases.
The US administration is exploring the possibility of using oil reserves located under military bases and other Pentagon facilities to replenish the country's strategic reserve. This was reported on May 7 by Bloomberg, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, Washington is looking for ways to replenish its Strategic Oil Reserve, which has declined amid the armed conflict with Iran. According to the agency, the start of fuel production at military facilities will not immediately help reduce high energy prices. However, such a step will allow the American authorities to fully manage the extracted resources and not depend on purchases from private companies.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) report for 2025, about 29.4 billion barrels of oil are concentrated on federal lands owned by the Ministry of Defense and other departments. There are also 391 trillion cubic feet (about 11 trillion cubic meters) of natural gas reserves in these territories.
Bloomberg reported on May 6 that OPEC oil production fell to a 36-year low in April due to the conflict in the Middle East, which hinders exports from the Persian Gulf. According to the newspaper, in April, production fell by 420 thousand barrels per day to 20.55 million barrels. This is the lowest figure since 1990. The main losses occurred in Kuwait and Iran.
