- The EU will ban the creation of deepfakes of a sexual nature without the consent of the participants
Representatives of the European Union (EU) countries have agreed on a ban on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications to create deepfakes of a sexual nature without the consent of the participants. This was reported on the website of the European Parliament on May 7 .
"The Parliament and the Council also agreed to ban artificial intelligence systems that create materials containing scenes of sexual abuse of children, or depict intimate body parts of an identified person or his participation in sexual acts without the consent of this person," the publication says.
For the amendments to enter into force, the agreement must be officially approved by the plenary session of the European Parliament and the EU member States. This procedure is usually formal in nature.
After final approval, companies owning AI models will have until December 2, 2026 to bring their systems in line with the new requirements.
On April 24, American singer Taylor Swift filed three applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to protect her image and voice from the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). According to the expert, protecting the characteristic visual image, including the costume and pose, gives the singer's team additional grounds to combat manipulation or images generated by neural networks.
On April 7, an American court for the first time prosecuted a citizen for distributing intimate photos created using artificial intelligence (AI). 37-year-old James Strahler sent threatening messages to his former partners. They contained both real and AI-generated nude images of victims.
