US President Donald Trump announced the temporary suspension of the Freedom escort mission in the Strait of Hormuz due to the reaction of Riyadh. This was reported on May 7 by the NBC television channel, citing two officials from the United States.

It is clarified that the decision was made after Saudi Arabia banned the US military from using its bases and airspace. According to sources, Riyadh is outraged by the lack of prior notification of the launch of the operation.

"Trump surprised the Gulf allies by announcing the Freedom Mission on social media on Sunday afternoon, which angered the Saudi leadership. In response, the kingdom informed the United States that it would not allow the US military to fly from the Prince Sultan base southeast of Riyadh or fly through Saudi airspace to support these efforts," the material says.

According to NBC's interlocutors, a telephone conversation between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman did not help resolve the dispute. As a result, the head of the White House was forced to stop the mission in order to restore access to the region's critically important airspace.

A source in Saudi Arabia confirmed to the TV channel that the leaders of the states regularly keep in touch. He noted that the problem with the US initiative arose due to the fact that "events are moving too fast." At the same time, the White House representative claims that the regional allies were notified in advance. According to a diplomat from a Middle Eastern country, Washington also did not coordinate the Freedom project with Oman before the official public statement by the American president.

The day before, Trump announced the suspension of the Freedom Project mission in the Strait of Hormuz in order to find out whether the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) will be able to sign an agreement. He noted that the blockade of the strait will continue.

On May 4, the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) announced that the United States would begin supporting the Freedom Project in order to restore freedom of navigation for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz with the participation of 15,000 military personnel. On the same day, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, said that the Iranians would be "wiped off the face of the earth" if they attacked American ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
