Russians named Victory Day as one of the main holidays.
Two thirds of Russian citizens call Victory Day the most important holiday. This was confirmed on May 7 by a study by the VTsIOM Analytical Center, which was reviewed by TASS.
The survey was conducted on April 17, 2026, and was attended by 1.6 thousand Russians aged 18 and over. According to the study, Victory Day is the most important holiday for 67% of Russian citizens.
According to VTsIOM, the share of Russians who consider May 9 to be the main holiday decreased by nine percentage points compared to 2005. At the same time, 25% of respondents believe that Victory Day should be perceived not as a holiday, but as a day of remembrance and mourning.
As Valery Fedorov, Director General of the VTSIOM Analytical Center, noted, Victory Day remains the second most popular state and family holiday in the country after New Year.
"Today we celebrate victory, our strength, our triumph. We really want to win and keep winning. And today, when Russia is once again going through difficult military times, it is the experience of our grandfathers' victory in the Great Patriotic War that inspires us," he said.
On May 6, Izvestia published footage of the ceremony of the first lighting of the Eternal Flame in the village of Shaturtorf in the Moscow region with the support of the United Russia Party. The flame caught fire in the park near the memorial complex dedicated to those who died during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). For the holiday, a complete reconstruction was carried out at the monument to the Unknown Soldier according to the popular program of the party.
