- The expert called premature conclusions about the imminent deal between the United States and Iran.
It is too early to talk about the proximity of the United States and Iran to an agreement, given Washington's contradictory statements. This opinion was expressed on May 7 in an interview with Izvestia by Murad Sadigzade, President of the Center for Middle East Studies, a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of World Economics and World Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.
"It is certainly premature to talk about this, that Iran and the United States are close to concluding an agreement," he said.
According to the expert, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, has repeatedly stated on social networks about the imminent signing of a lucrative deal, Washington's victory and the completion of Operation Epic Fury. However, as Sadigzade noted, the American leader then stated that the operation was suspended until Iran agreed to a truce on the terms of the United States and a commitment not to develop nuclear weapons.
Sadigzade stressed that distrust remains between the parties. He recalled that the United States and Israel have already carried out attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran during the negotiation process, so Tehran admits the risk of new provocations. It is noted that Washington may try to lull Tehran's vigilance, regroup forces, assess failures after the current aggression and then continue actions with new tactics.
The expert noted that Iran has traditionally had a rather weak air defense system. According to him, missile attacks, strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sabotage and airstrikes have caused damage to the country, including infrastructure and civilian facilities.
At the same time, the expert said that there is no need to talk about Iran's defeat. He pointed out that the Islamic Republic was able to resist the aggression, despite the capabilities of Washington and Tel Aviv.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran was able, in fact, to remain after the aggression that took place. And for the international community on the world stage, this is perceived, in fact, as a victory, because the US army, along with high—tech weapons, in addition, Israeli capabilities and resources did not bring the results that were clearly initially voiced in the United States," concluded the president of the Center for Middle East Studies.
On May 5, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the American operation Epic Fury against Iran has been completed. Later, Trump announced the suspension of the Freedom Project mission in the Strait of Hormuz to find out whether the conflicting parties would be able to sign an agreement. On May 6, the head of the White House announced that the Iranian side had allegedly agreed to renounce nuclear weapons. According to him, over the past 24 hours, the United States has held very good talks with Iran.
