The media learned about the use of nut shells by a Finnish company as fuel
Finnish energy company Helen has started using cashew nut shells as fuel. This was reported on May 5 by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
"The shell, which serves as an additional fuel solution, is a by-product of the food industry. Currently, there are no other ways to use it other than to produce heat, and it is also an economically competitive fuel," the company said in a statement.
According to the newspaper, cashew oil (CNSL), used in industry, is obtained from cashew shells. This oil can be used as fuel, and the shell itself can be used to produce biomass, which is used for energy purposes.
The head of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, said on May 5 that the energy sector in Europe is unstable due to dependence on fossil fuels. Lagarde added that Spain and Portugal, which have a higher share of non-fossil energy, were less affected than European countries that use mainly fossil fuels.
