The crash of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily, which was carrying British billionaire Mike Lynch, was caused not by a strong storm, but by crew errors. The Metro newspaper wrote about this on May 1, citing the Italian prosecutor's office.

According to the investigation, the weather on the night of the crash in August 2024 was not so bad as to be the reason for the sinking of the yacht. The prosecutor's office has raised the issue of bringing charges of manslaughter and negligence against the ship's captain and two of his subordinates.

Media representatives asked Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio why most of the crew managed to leave the ship, while passengers remained on board, although in case of an emergency, according to the rules, they should be the first to evacuate from the ship. The prosecutors promised to study the issue and find out whether the crew members and passengers were aware of the danger.

The 56-meter superyacht Bayesian sank on August 19, 2024 due to a severe storm off the coast of Sicily. According to the British media, the ship went under water in about a minute. There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the ship. 15 people managed to escape, eight of them were hospitalized. Lynch gathered guests on the yacht that day to celebrate the dismissal of charges against him in a criminal case of major fraud.

The Daily Mail newspaper on May 16, 2025 indicated that the reason for the collapse of the billionaire's yacht could be the vulnerability of the vessel to strong winds. According to Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents Andrew Molla, the wind that day was strong enough to turn the yacht over.
