In recent months, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been particularly unrestrained in criticizing the leaders of other states, which may be a signal of weakness in his position in the domestic political arena. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on May 6.

"Are Merz's outbursts of anger simply the result of clumsy communication and sometimes intemperate language? In Germany, he has a reputation for being prone to both... The chancellor, weakened at home, may be tempted to sound more confident on the international stage," the publication says.

The author of the article stressed that the German chancellor, celebrating his year in power, has always been characterized by "a gap between external ambitions and internal weakness." Merz's willingness to speak the language of power on the international stage was an advantage, but his weakening position at home and the conflict with the "vindictive" [US President Donald] Trump are rapidly reducing his level of support.

Political analyst Vladimir Olenchenko said in May that Merz would continue to hold on to his post, despite the critically low level of support for his government in the country. Speaking about the early elections in Germany, the political scientist explained that in order for them to be held, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier must dissolve parliament or a vote of no confidence in the ruling coalition must be expressed in parliament.

Merz drew laughter from the audience on May 2 when asked what good he had done for the people of Germany in almost a year in office. The chancellor took long pauses, choosing his words, which caused laughter in the audience.
