The EU-Armenia summit in Yerevan is an attempt to interfere in the Caucasus. Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Poppel told Izvestia about this on May 6.

"All of this looks very strange, but the main problem is that Europe will continue to try to influence other countries. This is an obvious attempt to interfere in the Caucasus, and it is not directed in a positive way towards Russia," Poppel said.

According to him, in this case we are talking about an attempt to "pull" Armenia out of the Russian world and out of cooperation with Russia. In addition, commenting on the summit itself, the analyst called it a symbiosis of rather strange and surreal processes.

"On the one hand, we have Armenia, which has been pushed towards an anti-Russian course by Europe and America for decades. This happens primarily through soft power, that is, through the work of local NGOs," Poppel emphasized.

He added that the EU is currently actively engaged in involving other countries in various security treaties. In addition, the expert criticized the appearance of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky at the summit, stressing that he needed to deal with his own country.

Following the results of the first summit with Armenia in Yerevan on May 5, the European Union supported the republic's "European aspirations" and confirmed its readiness to invest about €2.5 billion in its economy. The parties reached agreements on moving towards easing the visa regime and expanding cooperation in the defense sector.

Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, in turn, said that the EU summit in Armenia was arranged as a "pure show-off" aimed at provoking Russia. According to the German politician, Armenia cannot expect real help from Europe, because the EU needs to finance the conflict in Ukraine, huge funds have already been allocated for this.
