Sales of commercial vehicles decreased in Russia in 2026
While sales of new passenger cars in Russia increased by almost 10% in the first four months of this year, negative dynamics was recorded in all segments of commercial vehicles. Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, told about this in his Telegram channel on May 6.
Thus, in the segment of light commercial vehicles (LCVs up to 3.5 tons), sales decreased by 23% and amounted to 21 thousand units. The segment of medium-tonnage trucks (MCVs; 3.5-16 tons) sank by 17%, to 3.7 thousand units.
At the same time, the largest drop (-24%) was recorded in the segment of heavy trucks. In January-April, 12.5 thousand HCV units with a total weight of over 16 tons were sold (compared to 16.4 thousand units a year earlier). In addition, the sale of buses decreased by 8%, to 2.9 thousand units.
As the analyst explained, the reason for the multidirectional dynamics lies in the sources of purchase financing. The passenger car market primarily depends on the sentiments of end customers (individuals), while the comtrans market depends on the economy and finances of enterprises.
"The current economic situation is not conducive to the renewal and growth of corporate parks. Plus, refundable leasing flows still have a big impact on this market segment," Tselikov said.
In total, 422.3 thousand passenger and commercial vehicles, including buses, were registered in the Russian Federation in the first four months of this year. This is 6% more than in January-April last year (399.9 thousand units).
As previously reported on this day, by the end of April this year, 117.5 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 15.1% more than in the same month of 2025. The Lada Granta model topped the Russian car market in April 2026, and the Tenet T7 crossover of the domestic brand regained the title of the most popular SUV, ahead of the Haval Jolion.
